Inglewood Transit Connector Project Faces Major Setback Amid Rising Costs

Plans for a proposed 1.7-mile people mover connecting Los Angeles rail riders to the foot of SoFi Stadium have hit a significant roadblock. Recent votes by South Bay cities have jeopardized a crucial request for an additional $493 million needed to advance the project. This decision not only puts $1 billion in federal funding at risk but also raises questions about the future of public transport in the area.

The ambitious $2.4 billion elevated rail line, which Inglewood Mayor James Butts aimed to complete before the 2028 Olympics, was designed to glide over the city's downtown and attract tourists. However, escalating costs and shifting designs have complicated efforts to bring this vision to life, leading to a decline in support from key stakeholders.

Initially bolstered by the backing of Rams owner Stan Kroenke and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, the project has lost momentum. As plans emerged showing the rail construction impinging on their property lines, their enthusiasm waned. Further complicating matters, Congresswoman Maxine Waters has recently labeled the initiative a "boondoggle," arguing that the financial investment is not justified.

The South Bay Cities Council of Governments, which oversees funding from local sales tax measures, voted against the funding request from Mayor Butts. This decision has left many local leaders, including John Cruikshank, the mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes, feeling disillusioned. They argue that their cities have already contributed significantly to the project, and further funding would stretch their resources thin.

As the project stands, the odds of completion before the Olympics are diminishing. Mayor Butts, who has worked diligently to gather support and resources for the project, acknowledged the setback. He expressed a mix of determination and realism, stating, "I don’t give up on anything, but I am realistic. It was voted down. So, for all intents and purposes, that’s it."

Despite these challenges, the vision for a people mover remains crucial for enhancing connectivity to major entertainment venues like SoFi Stadium. Proponents argue that this transit solution would alleviate congestion during large events, potentially transforming the Inglewood area into a vibrant hub for visitors and residents alike.
