Operation Blue Agave: $1 Billion In Assets Frozen Linked To CJNG Cartel

In a significant crackdown on organized crime, assets exceeding $1 billion associated with nearly 2,000 individuals and companies tied to the notorious CJNG cartel have been frozen. This operation, known as Operation Blue Agave, is a collaborative initiative spearheaded by Mexico's Ministry of Finance and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The scale of this operation highlights the ongoing efforts to dismantle the financial networks supporting criminal enterprises in Mexico.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that this cooperative effort aims to eliminate protection for organized crime groups, asserting, "There will no longer be protection for any organized crime group; I will continue facing organized crime to maintain peace in the country." This declaration underscores the commitment of both governments to tackle organized crime through financial means, disrupting the operations of groups like CJNG.

At the center of this operation is Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, commonly referred to as "El Mencho," the alleged leader of CJNG, who is currently in hiding. With a $10 million bounty placed on his head, authorities are intensifying their efforts to target his associates and financial resources, aiming to weaken the cartel from within.

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), led by Santiago Nieto Castillo, reported that the assets frozen include those of 1,770 individuals, 67 companies, and two escrow accounts, totaling approximately $1.1 billion. This operation is part of a broader strategy to disrupt the CJNG cartel's operations, which have faced increased scrutiny and enforcement actions in recent months.

Operation Blue Agave represents a strategic move against the CJNG, especially following the arrests of El Mencho's family members, including his son, who was extradited to the U.S. on drug charges, and his brother-in-law. The designation of El Mencho as a "kingpin" by the U.S. Treasury Department further complicates business operations for him and his associates, effectively blacklisting them in financial circles.
